Australian Cooper 'S' Rebirth

The gearbox has received special attention with all flange set screws being replaced with higher tensile strength 'Unbrako' type machine screws and double-thickness washers.
Original zinc-plated steel frost plugs have been replaced with brass. The original oil gallery brass plugs have been drilled out and replaced with hex-drive grub screws. Note the late-model timing-chain tensioner. This required fitting the late-model timing cover as well. All fasteners have been renewed with high-tensile bright zinc-plated equivalents. When the car was purchased in the late 80s it was blowing some smoke. During this strip-down the reason became evident. The 2nd compression ring on #2 piston was found to have shattered - probably due to incorrect gapping - resulting in a badly damaged ring groove. Although the bore was already .040" oversize it was able to be recovered to the next size up - .060"
