About the Australian Cooper 'S'

Almost all of the body panels ended up being made locally, an obvious difference being the red primer - BL used black. Even the lowly registration plate came under scrutiny. LA lifted it from under the front bumper and mounted it on a new bracket. LA also fabricated new boot lids with a smaller depression and bracket to suit the Australian and NZ plates. All Coopers were Morris branded. A few, imported to New Zealand by Austin distributor Seabrook Fowlds were rebadged. Wheel arch flares had to be homologated for racing [primarily for Bathhurst], so these had to become a standard fitment to all Aussie 'S's. This required riveting a crescent-shaped metal strip to extend the wheel arches and act as the attachment for the vacuum-moulded [brittle] plastic flares. The 'S' also inherited the stainless grille and surround from the de Luxe and Mini 'K'. One item they never changed was the rear panel with the small screen and rounded tail lights. The 'S' engine was all British. Imported as CBU units, the engine ID plate was removed from the block and the engine number stamped directly on the casting. LA also specified their own engine colour.
